It is time to learn more about finances in the city. What projects are forthcoming? What will they cost? When will the dollars be needed? You will have a chance to voice your thoughts. Don’t expect to get excited “after the fact”. That is too late. The link below will give you some food for thought. More will be said in the weeks ahead. Get involved.

SUBJECT: City Finances and New Taxes
Snowed out in February. The subject is still a big one and we all need to know more about future finances in the city and what it will mean to all of us. Understanding is important so that you can properly communicate with the city in the near future. Your voice will be very important.

The city’s funds are broken out into the eleven funds noted below. The General Fund contains the dollars for day-to-day operations principally. When the expenditures in the General Fund exceed the revenues received it is said that the “crossover” point has occurred (gone from black to red figures). The city is not allowed to operate in the red so it must make the changes necessary to get back in the black (layoffs, cutbacks, borrowings, etc).

Whereas we do not have a December meeting, there is much to think about as we look to a new year.
Council Retreat..plan to attend all or some of this agenda setting meeting in Tacoma in January. Public Comment is allowed there and likely more than three minutes.
City Finances..the General Fund will drop by 50% in the next biennium and close in on the “crossover point”. Where are the dollars going and what does this mean?
Taxes..what taxes are available and what is the Council likely to do? What are the alternatives?
Volunteerism..what can we do in the city that will prove helpful to residents here?
